INTRODUCTION TO THE NAXOS TRAVEL GUIDE
CAVEAT: Everything on this site is for information only and nothing may be construed as a recommendation. The designers and publishers of this site can take no responsibility for disappointments arising from viewing these pages or for ruined holidays, upset stomachs, sunburn, drowning, missed planes or ferries or anything else that people might consider suing for.
Naxos
We realised, after publishing this site, that we had not given any reasons why you should choose Naxos for your holiday rather than any other island - we assume you already have reasons for wanting to go to Greece. Although the island has changed much over the years it is still not totally swamped with tourism. Unlike so many other islands, most restaurants and bars will be at least half full of local Greeks for Naxos has always been a - relatively - rich island and still has other ways of making money than the tourists. So it is more relaxed than other places yet at the same time lively. There are almost an uncountable number of places to eat and drink and, in some of them, you can even eat well. There are many miles of sandy beaches with superbly clear waters and numerous little coves off the beaten track if you want to be alone. You can expect continuous blue skies only broken occasionally by a welcome thunder storm but usually there is a pleasantly cooling breeze blowing. The Chora is the main town and, though its centre is small, you can wander for ages in the twisting medieval lanes surrounding the Venetian castle (Castro). Away from the tourist centres of Chora, Procopios, Aghia Anna, Plaka and Apollonas the Naxian way of life continues as ever. The centre of the island is mountainous and green with plenty of places to explore on foot, bike or car. The Naxiots are welcoming and friendly to strangers - well, most are - you can still find the prototype miserable owner of a taverna or bar. Oh, I don't know, it's just a nice place to go. Try it. Many have and many have been hooked, returning year after year, some finally settling there.
Navigation/Conventions
All directions are given, throughout this site, where sensible, as though you are looking out to sea
An INDEX is provided giving access to all pages on this site. Additionally, a full Table of Contents is included, giving access to everything on this site
Hyperlinks abound throughout this guide. Most words with links are underlined but click on any words or graphics that you think should lead somewhere. If they don't let us know and we'll, probably, emend the omission.
Clicking thumbnails opens a full size photo.
Maps have active areas and will take you either to a more detailed map or to information about the area or business. Clicking MAPS will first take you to a map of Greece; clicking on this to the Cyclades; Clicking on this to Naxos which is then divided into three. The three parts have "hot spots" to provide details of villages and beaches. Clicking on Chora - the main town of Naxos - will open a map of the town which contains several hot spots to give information on businesses or places of interest. The intention is to divide into six areas - clicking on each would open a detail of the excellent Skymap of the town. Each of these, again, would have hot spots and give you details of businesses in town and tourist attractions. At the moment I am still trying to get the permission of George Papoutsakis, who holds copyright exclusivity for the Cyclades, to use these last.
I have not put a "back" button on any pages as the equivalent button on all browsers is perfectly adequate.
Note: A CD-Rom of this site, opening in a web browser, is available for £10 including P&P and V.A.T. This includes a printable version of this site which is also included at Print This Site (under construction) - however, the online version is many megabytes and will take a lot of time to open and to print.

The comments about businesses are split between our views and the advertising blurb of the owners - we think, telling one from the other is fairly simple. Our particular favourites are in capitals or bold or both. Occasionally, where there could be confusion, we've added " " to show, obviously, that these are quotes.
Reviews, Complaints and Praise
What we would like, however, is your comments, reviews, complaints, praise of either the businesses of Naxos or of this site. All, except complaints, we will add to the site; complaints we will forward to the relevant business as we think it would be unfair to publish unsubstantiated moans but, if a particular business attracts several complaints, we will drop it from the site. So, write to The Guide at Reviews
As yet there are only a few businesses to click on and get greater detail. This is because we will be charging in future for these details to be added to the site. When we do so, once again, we will make it clear whether they are advertisements or our opinions. And don't take our opinions as gospel - there are many restaurants and bars, for example, that are other people's firm favourites which we, for some reason, don't like or have never even bothered to go to. Or, some used to be our haunts but, over the years, we have drifted away from them.
We have given very many links to other, relevant sites on the web and, although we will check them regularly, we must apologise if some of the sites are now defunct or have moved (or we've entered them incorrectly). Also, there are several hundred hyperlinks on this site and sometimes, when we have moved or removed content, the link will point to either "This page cannot be displayed ... " or to the wrong page. If this happens to you, please let us know!
